Why...

...when the President's farewell address runs long (or something similar) do television networks join shows "already in progress." Is there some parallel universe where the show was already running? Did the recording start automatically down at the TV station and no one knows how to rewind it?

It just seems like there should be a better way to do this.

Oh man, letting the shows run into someone else's time slot would wreak all kinds of havoc, mostly with advertisers, who, as we all know, are the reason for TV in the first place. :)
